MY Fishing Report

Yup! That's right. I was the one who got to do the fishing report. And you know why?! Because I caught 2 fish and Brian only caught 1 stocker. Ha ha!

Let me back up.....Last weekend Brian and I went up to Lake Silverwood. We hiked in to our fishing spot first thing in the morning. After about 15 minutes, I caught the first fish of the day...a 1 lb 4 oz Rainbow Trout!

A little while later, Brian caught a stocker Trout. (That just means it's small...the same size as the ones they stock the lake with.) You wouldn't usually keep one so small, but it was bleeding like crazy from where it was hooked. Brian has a swimbait that's almost bigger than that thing...lol.

Now here's where Brian likes to tell the story....I found this bug. I know, I know....but it looked like a tiny centipede that could swim. Well, I was "playing" as Brian would say, with this bug trying to figure out what it was.....when Brian noticed I had caught something. (My pole was in the pole-holder....that's why I didn't realize it.) Well, I ened up farming it....I had it on and was reeling in, but it somehow got stuck in something. He finally broke off and got away.
About 20 mintutes later, I was eating lunch...and wouldn't it figure, I had another fish on! I had my lunch in my hand with NO WHERE to put it down. Brian ran over and grabed my pole to set the hook....He COULD have taken my lunch so I could get my pole, but no...he had to steal ALL the glory! Once I put my lunch down, I went over and grabbed my pole back...How Rude! Anyway, back to the fish.....it put up quite a fight. I was actually a little dissapointed once I saw the fish. I figured it was something bigger, since it was so strong. Once I got it in, we saw it was a Rainbow Trout Hookjaw. I guess during spawning season, male trout "grow" this hookjaw to "attract" the lady fish...lol...and to protect their nest. Between Brian and I, this was the first Hookjaw either of us had ever caught. It ended up being 1 lb 6 oz....My Personal Best!

Well, I posted my report on FNN and got some pretty funny comments jabbing Brian....since he got schooled by his wife...LOL. But then one of the guys....we know him....just HAD to tell us how it really is. In tournaments, if someone else touches your pole when you have a fish on, and especially if they set the hook, you are disqualified because it's NOT considered your fish anymore. Thanks a lot glory stealer! So now Brian's walking around here like, 'Wow! I (meaning him) caught an awesome Hookjaw'. Well, I don't care what anyone says. Since we WEREN'T in a tournament, it was my pole, I baited it, I reeled it in, AND I cleaned it....it's MY fish!

A little warning....in the report, you will see the first Rainbow I caught that day cut open with TONS of eggs pouring out. I have to tell everyone who doesn't know this, first of all, when you catch a fish there's no way to know there are eggs inside. Sometimes you can tell they have a pooch, but you can't tell they are actually in spawning mode. Secondly, about spawning, fish in our local lakes can't technically spawn. They need running water, like a stream or river that runs into the lake. While there is a stream that brings melted snow into Lake Silverwood, by the time it is spawning season, it's dried up. Therefore, no spawning. The fish obviously are built to do so, so they still go through the biological changes, but RARELY do fish produce around here. Just have to mention that, I don't want anyone to think we killed thousands of fish...seriously there were probably thousands of eggs in there....

Here are my two Catches of the Day:
Like always, it was a fun day...especially since I out-fished Brian...lol!
